Award-winning writer Stephanie Carpenter discusses the challenges of depicting nineteenth-century women’s everyday experiences—how to imagine the ways that women’s clothing, food, working conditions, health, and legal status shaped their lives—by sharing her research experiences in archives, with emphasis on the evocative nature of material objects.
